Match dating app
Last updated: August 2026

The Match dating app is one of the oldest names in online dating, and it’s built for people who want to date with a purpose rather than swipe for fun. The big question is whether it’s worth paying for.

How this review was written: it draws on Match’s official pages, app-store listings, regulatory filings, news coverage and third-party reviews. It is not based on personal testing. Match’s pricing and plan details change often, so treat every price here as a snapshot and confirm the final amount at checkout.

What Is the Match Dating App?

Match is a relationship-focused dating service owned by Match Group. It launched in 1995 and runs on the web, iPhone and Android. Match launched in 1995 and is available on desktop and as a mobile app.

Match isn’t swipe-first. Detailed profiles and search tools come first, and swiping is secondary. Users state a dating intention, and options include a serious relationship, “Date, but nothing serious,” or still figuring it out. So the platform isn’t only for marriage-minded daters, but its positioning is clearly intentional dating.

Who uses it? One psychologist quoted by Forbes Health described the typical user as people in their late 20s and older, including many divorced daters returning to dating. That’s an expert opinion, not verified demographic data.

How Does the Match Dating App Work?

You create a profile, set preferences, browse recommended and searched profiles, like or message, and move from chat to a date. Based on the sign-up flow Forbes Health walked through:

  1. Create an account. Enter who you are and who you want to date, your ZIP code, age range, birthday, first name and email.
  2. Build your profile. Answer questions on height, relationship history, kids, education, drinking, smoking, ethnicity, religion and interests.
  3. Add photos and prompts. You need at least one photo and can add up to six, plus three topics and up to three values.
  4. Set your dating intention. This is shown on your profile.
  5. Discover recommendations. Daily Highlights and Discover suggest people.
  6. Search and filter. Match’s own page says free members can search by age, location and distance.
  7. Like or connect. Free members can send up to 50 likes a day.
  8. Message. When a like, message or Super Like is returned, the conversation opens for any membership level.
  9. Go on a date. Match offers date check-in, which lets you tell friends you’re meeting a match.

Match Dating App Features: Free vs. Premium

Tier names and exact feature placement vary by source and may change. This table reflects Match’s own page, where it speaks to a feature, and Forbes Health, where it doesn’t.

Match Dating App Pricing: How Much Does Match Cost?

Match pricing varies by country, platform, plan length, promotion and purchase method, so check the final price shown at checkout before you subscribe.

Here’s what one published snapshot lists. Forbes Health, updated in July 2026, shows these per-month equivalents:

PlanApprox. price (third-party snapshot)Billing periodMain features
BronzeListed as roughly $3.32–$6.66/mo3–12 monthsUnlimited likes and rewinds
SilverAbout $14.99–$29.99/mo3–12 monthsSee who likes you, daily highlights.
PlatinumAbout $19.99–$39.99/mo3–12 monthsFilters, read receipts, monthly Boost, weekly Super Like
DiamondNot clearly listedVariesAnti-Ghosting, weekly auto boosts

Treat these numbers carefully:

  • The same Forbes page elsewhere advertises plans “from $17.99 per month”, which doesn’t match its own table.
  • The bronze figures look unusually low compared with other tiers.
  • Older reviews describe a standard/premium structure with different prices.

What to compare before paying

  • Advertised price: often the best-looking number, usually for the longest plan
  • Monthly equivalent: the total divided by the plan length
  • Total charged: what hits your card up front
  • Renewal price: what you’re billed when the plan renews
  • Promotional price: may apply only to the first term

Auto-renewal and cancellation. Match subscriptions renew automatically unless you turn renewal off. Cancel with whoever bills you: Match’s own Manage Subscription page for direct purchases, or your Apple or Google Play account if billed there. Deleting the app or hiding your profile doesn’t cancel anything.

What Can You Do on Match for Free?

According to Match, a free account lets you:

  • Build a full profile with topics, interests and core values
  • Set and see dating intentions
  • Search by age, location and distance
  • Send up to 50 likes a day
  • Message every mutual match without limit
  • Use safety tools, including the verification badge, block and report, and date check-in

This conflicts with some third-party pages that say free users can only message “Top Picks” or can’t message at all. Match’s own page is more recent (modified September 30, 2026), but account experiences may differ. Test the free version before assuming you need to pay.

Upgrading adds visibility and control: seeing who liked you, more filters, read receipts, boosts and, at the top tier, anti-ghosting tools.

Match Dating App User Experience

Based on the current feature set and available user feedback:

  • Profiles are detailed. That makes it easier to judge compatibility before messaging.
  • The feel is more traditional than swipe apps. A psychologist quoted by Forbes said it can feel less flashy than swipe-first platforms.
  • Feedback is mixed. Forbes Health’s two testers disagreed. One saw reliable engagement but spam and low match quality; the other found poor value and low activity even with a premium subscription.
  • Ratings are middling. A third-party tracker showed the Match iOS app at 3.9/5 against Tinder’s 4.2/5. These numbers shift, and one Apple shopfront I checked showed different figures, so verify on the store.
  • Web and app both work. Match says free accounts work the same way on phone and desktop.

Who Is Match Best For?

Match dating app

Match may be good for:

  • People who want a relationship and are willing to be explicit about it
  • Adults who like detailed profiles
  • Users who want search and filter control
  • People comfortable with a subscription if it adds value

Match may not be ideal for:

  • Anyone who wants fully free, unrestricted messaging
  • Fans of fast, swipe-based apps
  • Budget-conscious users
  • People seeking a highly Gen Z-focused feel
  • People who dislike auto-renewing subscriptions

Is the Match Dating App Safe and Legit?

Match is an established, legitimate company, but no dating platform is risk-free.

Safety tools: Match offers a phone verification badge, block and report tools, date check-in, and in-chat reminders never to send money. Forbes Health also notes a partnership with RAINN.

Billing history. In August 2025, Match Group agreed to pay $14 million and stop misrepresenting guarantees, using dark patterns in cancellation flows, and retaliating against users who dispute charges. Match denies the allegations and any liability. The FTC complaint also concerned the adequacy of disclosure of the six-month guarantee and the efficacy of the cancellation process. Treat any “guarantee” terms with care.

Data incident. In January 2026, the ShinyHunters group claimed to have stolen over 10 million records from Match Group platforms, and Match said it believed a limited amount of user data was affected. Match says there is no evidence that logins, financial data or private chats were stolen. Independent reports differed on scale, so treat figures as disputed.

Practical safety

  • Keep early chats on the platform.
  • Video call before meeting when you’re comfortable.
  • Meet in public and tell a friend where you’ll be.
  • Never send money to someone you’ve met online.
  • Use a unique password and two-factor authentication where available.

Is the Match Dating App Worth It?

It depends on your goals. A fair way to decide:

  • Free version: useful for testing, given free messaging with matches and 50 daily likes.
  • Premium: worth considering if you want to see who likes you, use advanced filters and increase visibility.
  • Best value: relationship-focused daters who value detailed profiles and will actively use search and messaging.
  • Probably skip: people who want casual, swipe-driven or fully free experiences.

Before subscribing:

  1. Use the free tier long enough to judge activity in your area.
  2. Compare total charge, monthly equivalent and renewal price.
  3. Note where you’re billed (Match, Apple or Google).
  4. Set a reminder to cancel before renewal.
